The developers at MercurySteam, alumni of Rebel Act Studios, bring a rich heritage to their new project, Blades of Fire. Their previous work, the cult classic Severance: Blade of Darkness from 2001, is renowned for its groundbreaking combat system. This system allowed players to sever enemies' limbs, introducing a level of brutality and realism that became a hallmark of the game. Severance served as a significant source of inspiration for MercurySteam's new endeavor.
In creating Blades of Fire, the team also looked to modern action-adventure games for inspiration. Notably, they drew from the cinematic combat and intricately detailed world of the God of War reboot by Santa Monica Studio. Their goal was to blend fast-paced action with RPG elements to craft a deeply engaging and immersive experience for players.
A standout feature in Blades of Fire is its unique weapon crafting system. Players can forge their own blades, customizing aspects such as length, weight, durability, and balance. This system empowers players to tailor their weapons to suit their individual combat styles, adding a personal touch to the gameplay.
The narrative of Blades of Fire centers on the warrior Aran de Lira, who embarks on a perilous journey against a cunning queen with the power to turn metal into stone. Throughout his quest, Aran will encounter 50 different types of enemies, each demanding a distinct strategy to overcome.
Blades of Fire is set to launch on May 22, 2025, and will be available on PC (EGS), Xbox Series, and PS5, promising a thrilling addition to the action-adventure genre.
