Fans of *Assassin's Creed Valhalla* have voiced concerns over the game's extensive storyline and plethora of side quests, and Ubisoft has taken these critiques to heart. In response, the upcoming *Assassin's Creed Shadows* aims to be more streamlined and focused. Game director Charles Benoit revealed in an interview that the main campaign of *Shadows* will take approximately 50 hours to complete, while a full exploration including all regions and side quests will require around 100 hours. This is a notable reduction from *Valhalla*, which demanded at least 60 hours for the main story and up to 150 hours for complete content engagement.
Ubisoft has consciously worked on paring down optional content to prevent player fatigue. *Shadows* promises a more harmonious blend of narrative and side activities, aiming to retain the depth and richness of the world without the tedium. This approach ensures that players who crave a comprehensive experience won't have to compromise on quality for a shorter duration, while those who wish to focus on the story can complete the game without committing to hundreds of hours of play.
Game director Jonathan Dumont disclosed that the development team's trip to Japan profoundly influenced the creation of *Shadows*. The team was awestruck by the scale of castles, the layered mountain landscapes, and the dense forests they encountered. Dumont noted, "The sheer size of these fortresses makes you say, 'I didn't expect this scale.' We came to the conclusion that much more realism and attention to detail were required."
One of the key changes in *Shadows* is the more realistic world geography. Players will need to travel longer distances between points of interest to fully appreciate the open landscapes, yet each location will be more detailed and nuanced. This approach differs significantly from *Assassin's Creed Odyssey*, where points of interest were often closely packed. In *Shadows*, travel will take longer, and the world will feel more open and natural. As players progress, they'll encounter increasingly rich and detailed locations. Dumont emphasized that *Shadows* boasts a higher level of detail, allowing players to immerse themselves fully in the Japanese atmosphere.
