Xbox CEO Pledges His Support For Switch 2
Xbox Will Continue Porting Games to Nintendo Switch 2
During an insightful interview with Gamertag Radio on January 25, 2025, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer announced his commitment to supporting the Nintendo Switch 2. He revealed plans to port several Xbox games to this eagerly awaited platform.
Spencer's support comes even before the Switch 2 hits the market, highlighting his belief in Nintendo's potential success with its new hybrid console. In the interview, he mentioned his correspondence with Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, stating, "I was exchanging emails with Furukawa-san, the CEO of Nintendo. I gave him a big congrats and said my old eyes appreciate the larger screen."
"Nintendo's innovation and their significance in the gaming industry are truly commendable. I always applaud the steps they take. They released a teaser video, and although we’ll get more details in time, I'm excited to support them with our games. Nintendo is a vital part of our industry."
While specific titles weren't named in the interview, Microsoft's existing 10-year agreement with Nintendo, announced on February 25, 2023, ensures that games like "Call of Duty" will be available to Nintendo players on the same day as Xbox, with full feature and content parity, according to Microsoft president Brad Smith.
Currently, Xbox is expanding its reach by bringing games such as "Grounded" and "Pentiment" to rival platforms like the Switch and PlayStation. With the enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2, more Xbox titles may soon find their way to Nintendo’s new hybrid console.
Xbox is Working on a New Platform
In the same interview, Spencer reiterated Xbox's commitment to developing new hardware, even as they port games to competing consoles.
He emphasized that the most successful games are those that span multiple platforms. "I want to build a platform that supports those creators who aim to reach players on every screen," Spencer explained.
While Xbox aims to cater to game creators interested in multi-platform releases, Spencer stressed the importance of creating a platform that both developers and players would prefer. "Let’s go build innovative hardware that people want to use to play, whether that’s in their hands, on the television, or even in other settings."
This approach means Xbox will not restrict access to its games but will instead make them available to a broader audience, all while continuing to innovate with new consoles or handheld devices.
Xbox Plans to Reach More Players on Various Devices
On November 14, 2024, Xbox Marketing senior director Craig McNary unveiled the new slogan, "This is an Xbox." This slogan reflects Xbox's strategy to expand its presence across a variety of devices.
"'This Is an Xbox' invites people to enjoy Xbox gaming on multiple devices and screens," McNary explained. The campaign uses bold, iconic, and fun visuals with a light-hearted tone to showcase Xbox's evolution as a versatile platform. Launched on the announcement day, the campaign manifests in various engaging ways.
The campaign humorously labels different items like a remote control, laptop, cat box, bento box, and more, playfully defining what Xbox is or isn't. Despite the playful approach, the core message is clear: many devices are now interconnected with Xbox and Microsoft. To bring this vision to life, Xbox has partnered with companies like Samsung, Crocs™, and Porsche, enhancing the campaign in unexpected and entertaining ways.Xbox is taking a unique path in the gaming industry by porting its games to rival consoles, aiming to make its titles accessible to a broader audience rather than keeping them exclusive.
