Splitgate 2: The Highly Anticipated Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter Splitgate, has announced a sequel launching in 2025. This new installment, Splitgate 2, promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena shooter experience while retaining the core elements that made the original a hit.
A Familiar Foundation, Reimagined
Revealed with a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 aims for longevity, designed to "last a decade or more," according to CEO Ian Proulx. The developers acknowledge the need to evolve, stating that creating a lasting modern game required building tools for a more engaging and rewarding gameplay loop. This involved a re-evaluation of the portal mechanics, ensuring both casual and expert players can find success.
Powered by Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, Splitgate 2 will introduce a faction system, adding strategic depth without transforming into a hero shooter. While familiar, the sequel promises a completely refreshed look and feel compared to its predecessor. The game will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.
Building on a Legacy
The original Splitgate, known for its unique blend of fast-paced arena combat and portal-based movement, gained significant traction after its demo release, boasting 600,000 downloads in a single month. Its popularity led to server upgrades to handle the influx of players. After a period in early access, the original Splitgate officially launched in September 2022, with the developers subsequently announcing they would halt updates to focus on the sequel.
New Factions, Maps, and More
Splitgate 2 introduces the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions – Aeros (dash-based mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force) – each offering unique playstyles. While details are limited, the developers confirmed Splitgate 2 will not follow the hero shooter model of games like Overwatch or Valorant.
Gameplay reveals are slated for Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), but the announcement trailer showcases real maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.
Exploring the Lore
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a companion mobile app will allow players to delve into the game's lore through comics, earn character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
