Sony has tentative plans to re-enter the handheld market with a new portable console

Sony reportedly plans a return to the handheld gaming console market, potentially challenging Nintendo's Switch. Bloomberg reports suggest an early-stage development, but Sony may ultimately decide against release.

Long-time gaming enthusiasts recall Sony's PlayStation Portable and Vita. The mobile gaming landscape shifted, however, with the rise of smartphones and the subsequent withdrawal of many companies from the portable console market, except Nintendo. Despite the Vita's popularity, Sony apparently viewed smartphone competition as insurmountable.

Recent years have witnessed a resurgence of handheld gaming, fueled by the Steam Deck's success and the continued popularity of the Nintendo Switch. Enhanced mobile device capabilities also present a compelling case for a dedicated portable gaming console. This improved technology might convince Sony of a viable market for a premium handheld device.
