Insomniac Games Explores More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following Founder's Retirement
Insomniac Eyes Further Game Adaptations
Following the announcement of founder and long-time CEO Ted Price's retirement, Insomniac Games, creators of the beloved Ratchet and Clank series, expressed their keen interest in adapting more of their games into films. Co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider shared this sentiment during a recent interview with Variety.
"Looking back at the Ratchet and Clank movie from a few years ago, we got a head start on that process," Schneider stated. "So, naturally, we're interested in pursuing more projects like this. We're particularly fond of Ratchet and Clank."
While the 2016 Ratchet and Clank film received mixed reviews, Insomniac, now under the Sony umbrella since 2019, feels confident about future game-to-screen adaptations, citing Sony's proven success with titles like The Last of Us, which has garnered widespread critical acclaim.
Sony's Expanding Video Game Adaptation Portfolio
With Insomniac's expressed interest, Sony's track record of successfully adapting games into film and television provides a strong foundation. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the highly praised 2023 The Last of Us series.
Sony further solidified its commitment to game adaptations at CES 2025, announcing several upcoming projects. The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on HBO in April 2025, alongside a live-action Until Dawn film. A Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series is slated for Crunchyroll in 2027, with a Helldivers feature film and a Horizon Zero Dawn live-action film also in development, though release dates remain unannounced.
Insomniac Founder Ted Price Retires After 30 Years
In addition to the interview with Insomniac's co-Studio Heads, founder and CEO Ted Price announced his retirement after three decades at the helm. Price leaves behind a legacy built on iconic franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. He explained his decision, stating, "I made this decision last year. After over 30 years leading Insomniac, it felt like the right time to step aside and allow others to guide the team forward."
Three Insomniac veterans—Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang—will assume leadership as Co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in this transition, stating, "To maintain our success, we need leaders deeply familiar with our methods, leaders who've shaped our culture and processes, and who've earned the team's trust."
