Sony's PS5 Digital Edition, released in 2020, was the first console without a built-in disc drive, a feature also absent in the 2024 PS5 Pro. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing users to purchase and install a separate disc drive. This has led to significant demand, particularly in the US, where the disc drive has been scarce for months.

Despite the ongoing shortage, some retailers have restocked. As of January 15th, the disc drive is available at Amazon US and PlayStation Direct for $79.99. A third-party seller on Walmart is also offering it, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with limited stock.
