Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto hints at a possible return for the beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This exciting news comes on the heels of the upcoming "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics," a remastered collection of classic games in the series.
Matsumoto, speaking at EVO 2024, stated that the return of Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon is "always a possibility." The release of the collection offers a prime opportunity to reintroduce these characters to a new generation of players. He believes the increased familiarity with these original characters, absent from recent installments except for minor cameos, could spark significant fan interest.
This renewed interest could even extend beyond the Versus series. Matsumoto suggested that if demand is high enough, these characters could appear in future titles like Street Fighter 6. He emphasized that re-releasing these classic games expands Capcom's creative possibilities and provides a larger pool of content to work with.
The "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" itself has been in the works for several years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto also revealed Capcom's ambition to create a brand-new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode. He stressed that the company is actively exploring these possibilities, but the timing and feasibility of these projects depend on various factors, including collaboration with external parties.
Matsumoto concluded that re-releasing classic titles is currently the best way to re-energize the community and gauge interest for future projects. The success of the "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" could very well pave the way for the return of these beloved original characters and other exciting developments in the Capcom fighting game universe.
