Exciting news for fans of the Suikoden series: Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, an upcoming mobile RPG set to launch on Android and iOS platforms. This free-to-play game is slated for release later this year, although an exact date hasn't been confirmed yet.
For those unfamiliar, the Suikoden series has been captivating gamers since its debut in 1995. Created by Yoshitaka Murayama and developed and published by Konami, these RPGs draw inspiration from the classic Chinese novel, Water Margin, and are known in Japan as Suikoden. The franchise is renowned for its deep narratives woven with political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny. With a total of 11 entries, including spin-offs, the last installment hit the shelves in 2012. Now, instead of a traditional sequel or a full revival, fans are greeted with Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile entry into the beloved series.
What’s in Store?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while honoring the tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game maintains the series' nostalgic charm through its use of pixel art. You can get a sneak peek in the teaser trailer below.
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that are said to have shaped the world. The story follows Hou, the protagonist and son of a village chief, who celebrates his first successful hunt. However, his joy is short-lived as his village comes under attack, thrusting him into a quest for peace alongside his companions: Hisui, a servant with a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, a childhood friend driven by a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, a former general who now serves as a butler.
While the announcement has sparked excitement, it has also met with mixed reactions from the Suikoden community. Longtime fans have been eagerly awaiting a true sequel, and the introduction of Suikoden STAR LEAP as a gacha game has left some feeling uncertain about the future of the series.
We'll have a clearer picture once the game is released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates and developments.
