YouTuber Jacksepticeye, real name Seán William McLoughlin, recently shared his disappointment in a video titled 'A Bad Month,' where he revealed the cancellation of a Soma animated show he had been working on for a year. Soma, a critically acclaimed survival horror science fiction game developed by Frictional Games, was released in 2015 and has been a favorite of Jacksepticeye, who streamed it extensively upon its launch.
In the video, Jacksepticeye discussed the challenges he faced creatively, mentioning several projects that either got canceled or didn't progress as hoped. He expressed his excitement about the Soma animated show, a project he was deeply passionate about due to his love for the game, which he ranks among his top video games of all time.
Jacksepticeye had been in discussions with the developers for a year and was ready to move into full production. However, the project fell apart suddenly when an unnamed party decided to take the project in a "different direction." This abrupt change left Jacksepticeye "quite upset" and he chose not to delve into the specifics of what happened.
The cancellation of the Soma animated show significantly disrupted Jacksepticeye's plans for 2025, as he had intended to focus heavily on this project, which would have reduced his content uploads but provided a significant creative outlet. The sudden halt left him questioning his priorities and next steps, describing the past month as tough and frustrating.
Following Soma, Frictional Games released two more Amnesia titles: Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020 and Amnesia: The Bunker in 2023. In July 2023, Frictional's creative director Thomas Grip mentioned the company's intention to shift focus from horror to explore other emotional qualities in their games, aiming to provide immersive experiences beyond just horror.
