Dynasty Warriors: Origins – A New Beginning Forged From Cancellation
Dynasty Warriors: Origins, launching January 17, 2025, boasts the series' signature hack-and-slash combat set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms period. Players assume the role of an amnesiac protagonist, interacting with iconic historical figures. However, the game's creation involved a surprising twist: the cancellation of its predecessor, Dynasty Warriors 10.
Omega Force, the development studio, revealed that work on Dynasty Warriors 10, a planned mainline entry, was halted. This decision, according to producer Tomohiko Sho, stemmed from witnessing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. The technological leap spurred a strategic shift, leading to the development of Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
While abandoning Dynasty Warriors 10 proved challenging, producer Masamichi Oba confirmed that key elements were salvaged and integrated into Origins. The canceled title, described as similar to Dynasty Warriors 7 (2011) in its stage-clearing structure, contributed features like the free-roaming map and a more in-depth exploration of the Three Kingdoms storyline, both present in Origins. This strategic pivot, born from technological advancements, ultimately resulted in a more modern and strategically engaging gameplay experience. The cancellation of Dynasty Warriors 10 paved the way for a more refined and innovative entry in the franchise.
