Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate sequel.
A Playable Baldur's Gate Follow-Up Was Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke, in a PC Gamer interview, confirmed a playable follow-up to BG3 was in development before the decision to pursue new projects. While acknowledging it was a game fans would have enjoyed, the team felt hesitant to invest more years into a similar D&D title. The prospect of extensive reworking and a lengthy development cycle led to the decision to shelve both the sequel (potentially Baldur's Gate 4) and planned DLC for BG3.
The team prioritized pursuing original ideas, resulting in a significant morale boost. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, described by Vincke as their most ambitious yet.
A Return to the Divinity Series?
With Larian stepping away from the D&D franchise, speculation points towards a new entry in their Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at previously, Vincke clarified that their next Divinity project will be unexpected.
Baldur's Gate 3's Future
Baldur's Gate 3 will receive one final major patch in Fall 2024, introducing mod support, cross-play, and new evil endings.
The decision to abandon the Baldur's Gate sequel highlights Larian's commitment to pursuing innovative projects and maintaining high team morale. The future holds exciting possibilities, with the studio poised to deliver groundbreaking experiences in both established and uncharted territories.
