Xbox Game Pass Price Hikes and New Tier Announced: A Closer Look at Microsoft's Strategy
Microsoft recently announced price increases for its Xbox Game Pass subscription service and unveiled a new tier without "Day One" game releases. This article delves into these changes and examines Microsoft's broader strategy for Game Pass.
Price Changes Effective July 10th (New Subscribers) and September 12th (Existing Subscribers)
The price adjustments impact several Game Pass tiers:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Increasing from $16.99 to $19.99 per month. This tier includes PC Game Pass, Day One games, a vast game library, online play, and cloud gaming.
- PC Game Pass: Increasing from $9.99 to $11.99 per month, retaining Day One releases, member discounts, and EA Play.
- Game Pass Core: Annual price increases to $74.99 (from $59.99), but the monthly price remains at $9.99.
- Game Pass for Console: Discontinued for new subscribers starting July 10, 2024. Existing subscribers can maintain access as long as their subscription remains active. After September 18th, 2024, the maximum stackable time for Game Pass for Console codes will be 13 months.
Current console subscribers will retain access to Day One games until their subscription lapses. Once lapsed, they'll need to choose a different plan.
Introducing Xbox Game Pass Standard
Microsoft introduced a new tier, Xbox Game Pass Standard, priced at $14.99 per month. This tier offers a back catalog of games and online play but excludes Day One games and cloud gaming. More details on release dates and game availability will be shared soon.
