Application Description

Gordang Sambilan, a traditional art form of the Mandailing Batak people, is a captivating musical ensemble. "Gordang" translates to drum, while "sembilan" means nine; thus, Gordang Sambilan comprises nine drums of varying lengths and diameters, each producing a unique tone. Six players typically perform, with the smaller drums (1 & 2) providing the "taba-taba" rhythm, drum 3 the "tepe-tepe," drums 4 & 5 the "kudong-kudong" and "kudong-kudong nabalik," drum 6 the "pasilion," and drums 7, 8, & 9 the "jangat." Historically performed only during sacred ceremonies, Gordang Sambilan's popularity has expanded to include weddings, welcoming ceremonies, and national holidays. Reflecting its cultural significance, this Indonesian heritage instrument has even graced performances at the Presidential Palace. [2]
