Darkest Dungeon Mourns the Loss of its Beloved Narrator, Wayne June
The Darkest Dungeon community is in mourning following the passing of Wayne June, the iconic voice behind the game's narrator. The news was shared across Darkest Dungeon's social media channels and official website. While the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, tributes are pouring in from fans and developers alike.
Red Hook Studios, the developers of Darkest Dungeon, described their collaboration with June as "incredible and fulfilling." Creative Director Chris Bourassa and co-founder Tyler Sigman initially discovered June through his captivating narration of H.P. Lovecraft audiobooks. His distinctive baritone voice, they recalled, possessed a unique magnificence that perfectly complemented the game's gothic atmosphere. Bourassa noted, "He was a consummate professional, and his love of his craft was an inspiration. His inimitable work is woven into the very fabric of our industry in a way that cannot be forgotten. It is one of my greatest honors to have written for him this past decade. Though I never got to shake his hand, I knew him to be a friend. Thank you, Wayne."
Bourassa further explained to PC Gamer how June's voice became integral to Darkest Dungeon's identity, starting with the game's trailer and extending to its sequel. The decision to incorporate a narrator, they revealed, stemmed directly from their admiration for June's work on the Lovecraft audiobooks. "I think more verbatim, it was, 'We should get somebody like Wayne June to narrate the trailer.' Then we thought—wait, Wayne June reads stuff for a living! Maybe he would do it! The work of course was so good that we decided to add a narrator to the game itself," they shared.
An outpouring of grief and appreciation has followed the announcement. Fans are sharing their condolences and celebrating June's memorable contributions to the game, often quoting his lines which have become ingrained in their memories. His distinctive delivery and memorable phrasing have resonated deeply with players, making his voice an unforgettable part of the Darkest Dungeon experience. Wayne June's legacy will undoubtedly live on through the countless players whose gaming journeys were enriched by his narration. May he rest in peace.
