Hyper Light Breaker offers players an expansive array of options, including a diverse selection of characters, each with unique playstyles, known as Breakers. These characters are pivotal in the fight against the Abyss King, adding depth and variety to the gameplay experience.
Unlocking new characters in Hyper Light Breaker is straightforward compared to many roguelikes, yet the game doesn't explicitly detail the process. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the characters available in the early access version of Hyper Light Breaker and the steps to unlock them. As of release, only two characters can be unlocked, but we'll keep this guide updated as more Breakers become available.
How to Get New Characters in Hyper Light Breaker
To unlock new characters, you'll need to collect Abyss Stones, which drop exclusively from defeating the Crowns, the game's bosses. Before facing these bosses, you must first acquire Prisms, which serve as keys to their arenas. You can locate Prisms on the map by following the golden diamond icon.
After defeating a boss, return to the teleporter at the Cursed Outpost. Here, you can select the Breaker you wish to unlock and spend your Abyss Stones to make them playable. Currently, there are nine characters in total, but only two are unlockable at this stage. The method for unlocking the rest remains to be seen.
All Characters in Hyper Light Breaker
Each character in Hyper Light Breaker starts with a SyCom, a crucial item that sets their base stats and core perk, defining their playstyle. Here's a detailed look at each character and their unique abilities:
Vermillion
Vermillion is the initial character players encounter, equipped with the Gunslinger SyCom by default. This SyCom provides a balanced stat package, favoring ranged combat, with a special ability that ensures consecutive critical hits with Rail shots.
For players who prefer close combat, Vermillion can switch to the Tank SyCom, which boosts armor upon perfect parries and offers superior defensive and melee stats compared to Gunslinger, making it a safer choice overall.
Lapis
Lapis begins with the Lightweaver SyCom, enhancing Rail shot damage after collecting a Battery. Her distinguishing feature is the Warrior SyCom, which increases her core stats with every upgrade, making her increasingly formidable as the game progresses.
Lapis is highly effective with either SyCom, but the Warrior option turns her into a powerhouse, potentially surpassing other Breakers in terms of raw stats with sufficient upgrades.
Goro
Goro is tailored for ranged combat, equipped with the Astrologer SyCom by default, which accelerates the charging of Blade skills while shooting. The unlockable Sniper SyCom further boosts his critical hit rate, categorizing him as a ranged glass cannon.
While Goro's damage output is significantly higher than that of Vermillion and Lapis, his lack of a defensive SyCom can make him challenging to master. However, for players who can harness his potential, Goro proves to be an exceptionally effective combatant.
