Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus Essentials and Games Catalog offerings, effective from January 2026. The focus will now be exclusively on PlayStation 5 titles, marking a departure from including PS4 games as a regular part of the monthly games lineup and the Game Catalog.
This update was disclosed alongside the reveal of February 2025's monthly titles in a recent PlayStation Blog post. Sony stated, "As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog." Importantly, this change will not impact the monthly titles that subscribers have already claimed. However, Games Catalog titles will remain available until they are rotated out as part of the regular monthly refresh.
Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience and optimizing the benefits for its subscribers. These include exclusive discounts, access to online multiplayer, and online game save storage. As part of this evolution, Sony emphasized, "As we shift our focus to PS5, we look forward to adding new PS5 titles monthly for you to enjoy."
The PS4, which launched in 2013 and was succeeded by the PS5 in 2020, has seen a significant portion of its user base transition to the newer console. Sony noted, "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles."
It remains uncertain whether Sony will relegate PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Any such decisions are likely to be announced closer to the implementation date.
