Paramount Pictures has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will zoom onto the big screen on March 19, 2027, according to Variety. This gives fans a two-year wait before the blue blur returns to theaters. While the release date is confirmed, plot details and further casting information remain under wraps for now.
The announcement comes as no surprise, given the phenomenal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film raked in $218 million domestically and over $420 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Sonic film to date, surpassing the impressive $148 million earned by the first installment. This success is particularly noteworthy considering the initial controversy surrounding the original Sonic design, which underwent significant changes during post-production.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, continuing the iconic rivalry between Nintendo and Sega on the silver screen.
The live-action Sonic franchise has steadily expanded, now encompassing three feature films and a Knuckles-centric spin-off TV series. The films follow Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he battles his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each film has introduced more characters from the game's universe, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with the latest installment finally bringing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) into the live-action fold. While Sonic 3 revealed a new character joining the franchise, we'll keep that a secret for now.
