The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is an outstanding choice for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles. It surpasses Sony's minimum speed requirements for the PS5, offering impressive sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,300MB/s. While it's faster than the non-Pro version of the 990 Evo, it's not as fast as the 990 Pro. The key distinction is that the 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive, but this doesn't affect PS5 performance. For gaming PCs, it uses HMB (host memory buffer) to leverage a small amount of system RAM, ensuring that gamers won't notice any performance difference compared to the 990 Pro.
This SSD does not come with a preinstalled heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is power-efficient and generates less heat than previous SSDs. This means it should work perfectly in a PS5 without thermal throttling, though adding a heatsink for extra peace of mind wouldn't hurt and would only cost an additional $7.
