Robert Eggers, fresh off his gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct a sequel to the beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth.
According to Variety, Eggers will pen the script alongside his The Northman collaborator, Sjón. This marks a shift from the previously announced sequel spearheaded by Scott Derrickson (Sinister). With no progress reported since 2023, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have opted for Eggers' vision.
The 1986 original, Labyrinth, featured David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, who abducts the baby brother of Jennifer Connelly's character. Connelly's journey into a fantastical realm to rescue her sibling, aided by a cast of Henson puppets, is a cinematic touchstone.
Eggers' plate is full. He's also helming a werewolf film, Werwulf, aiming for a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England, employing authentic Old English dialogue. A transformation into a lupine creature is, presumably, on the cards.
Nosferatu, Eggers' recent Christmas release, is a reimagining of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a real estate agent's ill-fated trip to Transylvania to broker a castle sale, triggering a cascade of vampiric horrors for him and his wife, Ellen.
Nosferatu garnered four Oscar nominations: Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Read our Nosferatu review here.
