Nintendo has officially confirmed that the mysterious new button on the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con is indeed the "C" button, putting to rest the earlier rumors. The confirmation came via the newly launched Nintendo Today! app, where the App Store and Google Play listings feature an image that, upon closer inspection, clearly displays the "C" on the button. Initially revealed earlier this year alongside the Switch 2, the button did not show a letter in the first images, but it has now been confirmed as the "C" button as previously speculated.
Speculation abounds regarding the function of this new button. Some believe it could be related to wirelessly casting the Switch 2 to a TV or enabling screen sharing. Others speculate it might switch the Joy-Con's functionality, such as into a mouse mode. There's also talk about it possibly being linked to new group or voice chat features.
Nintendo has scheduled a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, where we hope to learn more about the C button and other features. In the meantime, here's what we know for certain about the Nintendo Switch 2:
- The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in 2025, likely not before June based on the hands-on event schedule.
- The console is larger than the original Switch, with bigger Joy-Con that appear to be usable as a mouse.
- It features two USB-C ports, one at the top and one at the bottom, unlike the original Switch which had only one.
- The Switch 2 is backward compatible, capable of playing both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, as well as Switch 2 exclusive titles. However, some Nintendo Switch games may not be fully compatible.
- A new Mario Kart game is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2.
