In 2023, The CW made headlines when it canceled a highly anticipated live-action series featuring the beloved Powerpuff Girls, who were reimagined as grown-up versions of themselves. Recently, a teaser video from this abandoned project surfaced online, giving fans a glimpse into what could have been. The video, which was briefly available on the "Lost Media Busters" YouTube channel before being taken down by Warner Bros. Entertainment due to copyright issues, offered a provocative look at the series.
The three-and-a-half-minute trailer showcased the adult lives of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. Blossom, portrayed by Chloe Bennet, was depicted as stressed and burnt out, while Bubbles, played by Dove Cameron, turned to drinking. Buttercup, brought to life by Yana Perrault, embraced a rebellious nature and challenged gender norms.
The trailer's narrative followed the trio as they accidentally killed a man named Mojo and subsequently left Townsville. Years later, they returned to visit their father, Professor Utonium, played by Donald Faison. Upon their return, they discovered that Mojo's son, Jojo, had become the mayor of Townsville and was seeking revenge after brainwashing its citizens. The trailer was infused with edgy humor, including references to juggalos and provocative comments directed at Jojo.
Although the footage was authentic, The CW confirmed to Variety that it was not an official trailer meant for public viewing. The live-action Powerpuff Girls project, announced in 2020, faced numerous challenges, including a failed initial pilot and the exit of Chloe Bennet from the cast. CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz explained the cancellation by stating, "The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner studios. In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why we didn’t want to go forward with what we had. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might’ve felt. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt, let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board."
This glimpse into the canceled series has sparked discussions among fans, offering a unique perspective on how the iconic characters might have been portrayed in a more mature setting.
