Keanu Reeves has delivered exciting news for fans eagerly awaiting Constantine 2, confirming the project is progressing to the scriptwriting stage. John Constantine, the occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, was memorably portrayed by Reeves in the 2005 film, a cult classic that cemented its place in cinematic history. For two decades, fans have clamored for a sequel, a desire echoed by Reeves himself.
Now, it appears Constantine 2 is closer to reality than ever before. Reeves recently revealed a successful pitch meeting at DC Studios: “We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’” he told Inverse. “So, we're going to try and write a script.”
This is encouraging, but it's crucial to remember that a green light from DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran is not yet guaranteed. Constantine 2 remains unconfirmed within the rebooted DCU, and hasn't been officially acknowledged by Gunn or Safran. The project remains somewhat precarious.
However, Reeves hinted that, if produced, Constantine 2 will remain consistent with the original film's universe. “We're not going off that,” he assured fans, adding with a touch of humor: “John Constantine's going to be tortured even more.”
Reeves' comments follow those of producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who in September mentioned a completed script for Constantine 2, playfully expressing his apprehension about reading it: “You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough,” he told ComicBook. “I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
