DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression in a recent promotional video.
A new TV spot for the upcoming Superman film, featuring previously unseen footage, sparked a flurry of online discussion. The 30-second clip showcases Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy setting and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight.
The scene of Superman in flight prompted viewer comments questioning the unnatural stillness of his face contrasted with the movement of his hair and cape. Some attributed this to CGI imperfections. However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot contains no CGI enhancements to Superman's face, explaining the effect as a result of the close-up wide-angle lens used. He confirmed that the Svalbard, Norway location and David Corenswet's performance are entirely authentic.
Despite Gunn's explanation, debate continues, with some comparing the shot to a similar scene featuring Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Nevertheless, excitement for the Superman film remains high. The movie, the first in the DCU's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters," is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
