Lizzy Caplan, the actress slated to star opposite Channing Tatum in the canceled Gambit movie, recently revealed the film's unique approach to the superhero genre. Speaking to Business Insider, Caplan described the project as having "a really cool idea," a "30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world."
Tatum's long-fought attempt to bring the fan-favorite X-Men character to the screen ultimately fell through after the 2019 Disney-Fox merger. This setback, which Tatum himself has described as "traumatizing," seemed to put an end to his Gambit aspirations until his surprise cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Caplan confirmed her involvement in the scrapped Gambit film, stating that she had signed on and even held meetings with Tatum. "We got down the road, we were gonna shoot it," she said. "I think there was a start date.” This aligns with comments made by producer Simon Kinberg in 2018 to IGN, who described the film's intended tone as a "romantic or sex comedy vibe," fitting Gambit's character as a "hustler and a womanizer."
The future of Tatum's Gambit remains uncertain, although Marvel Studios has confirmed the X-Men's eventual integration into the MCU. Last August, Ryan Reynolds' tweet of a high-quality Deadpool & Wolverine scene reignited fan speculation regarding Gambit's potential return.
Warning! Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers follow.
