Beyond the release date, Sandfall Interactive showcased new characters and detailed gameplay mechanics.
Meet the New Recruits: Monoco and Esquie
Expanding the roster to seven playable characters plus one dedicated to exploration, we meet Monoco and Esquie. Monoco, a friendly yet bloodthirsty Gestral, possesses the unique ability to transform into defeated enemies, adding a thrilling twist to combat. Gestrals are notably immune to the Paintress's power. Esquie, a living legend and the oldest, strongest being in the world, plays a crucial support role, unlocking new areas and abilities by retrieving his special stones.
Remember the other playable characters, Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso? Introduced in an October 16th, 2024 YouTube video, this diverse team unites to break the cycle of death.
Reimagined Turn-Based Combat and Deep Character Customization
Sandfall Interactive isn't just focused on visuals; they've revolutionized classic turn-based combat. As highlighted in an Xbox Wire article (January 23rd, 2025), CEO and Creative Director Guillaume Broche explains their vision: "We wanted it to be like a game that feels like a real game."
This is achieved through a reactive turn-based system, incorporating real-time elements like dodging and parrying for increased damage. The timing can be adjusted via difficulty settings, catering to various skill levels.
Deep character customization is key. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees, like Lune's "Stain" resource. Evolving "Pictos" (equipment modifiers) after four battles yields Luminas (passive effects), offering permanent enhancements and countless build possibilities.
With the reactive turn-based system and extensive character customization, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 promises a strategic and reflex-testing experience unlike any other.
