10 LitRPG Books I Recommend You Start Reading in 2025

Author : Isaac Update:Mar 16,2025

Reading is my absolute favorite pastime. While I enjoy video games and TV, nothing quite compares to immersing myself in a captivating book series. My reading journey began with the magic of Harry Potter, branching out to sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries, and even non-fiction. However, my true literary passion ignited upon discovering the LitRPG genre—a captivating blend of storytelling and role-playing game elements. It quickly became my sole focus, and I'm thrilled to share my top LitRPG recommendations with you.

A fantastic aspect of these books is their availability through Kindle Unlimited. Given the length of some series, a subscription offers significant savings. Audible subscriptions provide an alternative listening option for those who prefer audiobooks.

What is LitRPG?

For newcomers, LitRPG stands for Literary Role-Playing Game. The genre incorporates RPG elements reminiscent of video games. While some stories involve characters literally entering video games, the genre is far broader. All LitRPG features game-like mechanics, but not all are strictly video game simulations. The books listed below share common elements: leveling systems and power hierarchies that characters overcome through experience. I've included a mix of progression fantasy and LitRPG, offering similar engaging experiences.

He Who Fights with Monsters is a fast-paced, action-packed adventure with witty dialogue. Its unique leveling system and compelling characters make it a must-read for fantasy comedy lovers. This remains my favorite LitRPG series, consistently delivering high-quality storytelling.

The story follows Jason Asano, who wakes up in a magical world with newfound powers and a distinct lack of hair. His humorous approach to his predicament allows him to navigate cannibals, monsters, and even relationships with remarkable ease. A fantastic read featuring a morally complex protagonist you'll adore.

The series is currently on book 11, with more installments planned by author Shirtaloon.

The Path of Ascension offers a less traditional approach, as the protagonist isn't transported to another world. However, it presents a richly detailed universe centered around magical dungeon portals ("rifts") and powerful immortals.

The story follows Matt, an orphan who dreams of conquering rifts and battling the monsters that killed his parents. His initial setback—a weak talent—forces him to overcome adversity through hard work and determination.

While the first book captivated me, the character development in books two and three solidified its place among my favorites.

3. Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl is a non-stop adventure featuring an unconventional protagonist and a delightful cat named Princess Donut (arguably the true star). It's a fast-paced, engaging read with plenty of action and skill progression.

The story follows Carl, who finds himself trapped in an underground dungeon with his ex-girlfriend's cat as the world ends. Together, they navigate an intergalactic game show run by advanced alien races and a chaotic AI. It's a fun, action-packed adventure with memorable lines and satisfying skill progression.

The seventh book, released in 2024, maintained the series' high standard. Author Matt Dinniman's other works are also worth exploring.

4. Unsouled (Cradle Series)

Similar to The Path of Ascension, the Cradle series doesn't involve transportation to another universe. Instead, it immerses you in a deeply developed world with a unique power cultivation system and a likable protagonist. It's an excellent choice for fantasy fans who may not be strictly LitRPG enthusiasts.

The story follows Lindon, born "Unsouled" with seemingly no potential for power. Despite his determination and intelligence, he's destined for a powerless life until a chance encounter alters his fate.

The 12-book series concludes with a satisfying ending. Will Wight's other works are also highly recommended.

5. Beware of Chicken

Beware of Chicken stands out for its unique approach. Unlike the action-packed adventures of other entries, this series focuses on a man who abandons the path to power to become a farmer.

The story follows Jin Rou, a cultivator striving for mastery until his death and subsequent merging with an earthling's consciousness. The new Jin Rou chooses a peaceful life as a farmer, discovering unexpected friendships, family, and surprising power along the way.

Beware of Chicken is a relaxing yet satisfying read for those seeking a gentler LitRPG experience.

6. Defiance of the Fall

Defiance of the Fall

As the longest series on this list, Defiance of the Fall is a significant commitment, but well worth the investment. The story begins with a bang and maintains its momentum as the protagonist overcomes numerous challenges.

The story follows Zachary Atwood, who finds himself alone as the world integrates into the multiverse. Equipped with a hatchet and sheer luck, he must fight an invading force while uncovering the secrets of his new reality.

With 14 books completed and a 15th on the way, Defiance of the Fall offers a complex leveling system and intriguing skill progression.

7. Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

Arcane Ascension forgoes detailed stat sheets and complex leveling systems. Instead, it introduces a world governed by powerful beings who offer unique magic ("attunements") to those who survive their challenging trials.

The first-person narrative follows Corin Cadence, who seeks his attunement after his brother's death. His journey leads him to Lorian Heights Academy, where he discovers more questions than answers.

Sufficiently Advanced Magic was my gateway into LitRPG. Its magic school setting and rich fantasy elements make it an accessible entry point to the genre. Andrew Rowe's companion series are also highly recommended.

8. The Grand Game

For stealth game enthusiasts, The Grand Game is a compelling choice. Unlike other entries, the protagonist is an assassin who prefers subtle approaches to problem-solving.

The story follows Michael, who awakens in the Forever Kingdom with amnesia. He must learn to fight and navigate a dangerous dungeon while uncovering the secrets of this world and his role in the "Grand Game."

The Grand Game offers a unique perspective on the genre. While currently seven books are available, books eight and nine are available for pre-order.

9. The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

The Completionist Chronicles serves as an excellent introduction to LitRPG. It incorporates familiar MMO elements with unique twists that will keep you engaged.

The story centers on Joe, a wheelchair-bound ex-military medic who finds a new life in a virtual MMORPG. His unique background leads him to a secret class, "Ritualist," as he levels up his magic and skills through quests.

The series expands significantly in later books, venturing into entirely new worlds.

10. Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

See it at Amazon See it at Audible

Level Up or Die is a slow-burn adventure set in the literal underworld. Unlike other stories where characters are transported to magical realms, this series places the protagonists in a dark and dangerous subterranean world.

The story follows Elorian, a gamer who finds himself trapped in the underworld with other players. Despite their magical powers and ability to level up infinitely, they're far from happy with their situation. They're being exploited by a succubus, who drains their power as they progress through the dungeons.

With vampires, dragons, demons, and giant lava cats, this series is a thrilling adventure ideal for LitRPG newcomers.
