Geralt of Rivia Returns, but Not as the Star of Witcher 4
Voice actor Doug Cockle confirms Geralt's presence in the upcoming Witcher 4, but clarifies that the iconic Witcher will not be the protagonist. While the White Wolf's return is exciting news for fans, Cockle emphasizes a shift in focus towards new characters. In an interview with Fall Damage, he stated, "Witcher 4 has been announced... Geralt will be part of the game, but the game won’t focus on Geralt; it’s not about him this time."
The identity of the new protagonist remains shrouded in mystery, fueling speculation among fans. Cockle himself admits, "We don’t know who it’s about. I’m excited to find out."
Intriguing clues from a two-year-old Unreal Engine 5 teaser, showcasing a Cat School medallion, suggest a potential connection to surviving members of that order. Gwent: The Witcher Card Game further hints at these vengeful survivors.
Another strong contender for the lead role is Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter. Her possession of a Cat medallion in the books, and the subtle in-game substitution of her Cat medallion for Geralt's Wolf medallion in Witcher 3, strengthens this theory. Ciri's potential ascension to the leading role might see Geralt in a mentor-like capacity, similar to Vessemir.
Witcher 4's Development: A Mammoth Undertaking
The Witcher 4, codenamed Polaris, officially commenced development in 2023, and by October, nearly half of CD Projekt Red's development team (approximately 330 developers) was dedicated to the project. This number has since increased to over 400, making it the studio's largest project to date. However, game director Sebastian Kalemba assures fans that the game aims to both welcome newcomers and satisfy long-time fans.
Despite the significant investment and manpower, CEO Adam Kiciński indicated a release date at least three years out, citing the ambitious scope and the development of new technology within Unreal Engine 5. The extensive development and new technology suggest a considerable wait for the game's release. For release date predictions, further reading is recommended.
