A “Yakuza Wars” trademark filed by Sega was made public today on August 5, 2024, and has since sparked considerable conjecture among fans. The trademark, filed under Class 41 (Education and entertainment), pertains to a product for home video game consoles, among other goods and services.

The filing date was July 26, 2024. Details on this prospective project remain undisclosed, and Sega has not formally announced a new Yakuza title yet. Known for its compelling narratives and robust gameplay, Yakuza has garnered a devoted fan base eager for new content, especially during a flourishing period for the franchise. It's important to note that the registration of a trademark does not necessarily signify the announcement, development, or release of a game. Companies often secure trademarks for potential future projects, and not all of them come to fruition.

Given the name "Yakuza Wars," many fans speculated that it could be a spin-off title for Sega's popular Yakuza/Like a Dragon action-adventure RPG franchise. Some fans theorized that Yakuza Wars might be a crossover between Yakuza and Sakura Wars, a steampunk cross-genre video game series developed by Sega. There were also speculations that the trademark could pertain to a mobile game, although Sega has not confirmed or announced any specific plans.

Sega is at a time where the company can be seen actively expanding the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise. The action-adventure RPG series is set to debut as an Amazon Prime series, with Ryoma Takeuchi starring as the iconic Kazuma Kiryu and Kento Kaku as the antagonist, Akira Nishikiyama.

Interestingly, the creator of the game franchise, Toshihiro Nagoshi, revealed a few months ago that the Yakuza/Like a Dragon was initially rejected by Sega several times before becoming a hit. The series has since captured the hearts of fans not only in Japan but also worldwide.
