Following my exploration of the Switch's top party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the best visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. The order is entirely arbitrary.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection
Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. Their 2024 release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, both physically and digitally, is a stunning achievement. It's a true sequel, though this might not appeal to all players. The production values are exceptional, and the shockingly good ending justifies its M rating. Unexpectedly, it's a top contender for my Game of the Year. Download the demo! For those wanting to experience the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design will find much to love.
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)
A perennial favorite, VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action shines with its narrative, music, aesthetics, and memorable characters. Its Switch port is excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks, change lives – it's that simple.
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is the definitive version of a storytelling masterpiece. This pure visual novel, encompassing the original game and additional content, is a stunning achievement. Its success on Switch is well-deserved, as the platform perfectly complements its gameplay. Prepare for a gothic horror experience that will linger long after the credits roll. The music alone is incredible.
Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)
While sold separately on the eShop and in physical imports, the North American Switch bundle justifies treating Coffee Talk Episodes 1 and 2 as a single entry. Though not reaching the heights of VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk offers a relaxing experience with a captivating story, charming pixel art, and delightful music. Perfect for coffee lovers and those who appreciate engaging characters.
Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)
This entry encompasses Tsukihime, Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo), and the recently released Fate/stay night Remastered. All are lengthy but rewarding. Fate/stay night serves as a great introduction to classic visual novels, while Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows as a strong contender in terms of quality.
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)
Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT is a surprising gem. Its narrative, presentation, and even its meta-elements are captivating. This mystery adventure game boasts excellent characters, art, and mechanics, making it a worthwhile addition to any adventure game collection.
Gnosia ($24.99)
Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. The core gameplay involves identifying imposters and voting them into "cold sleep." Despite some RNG-related frustrations, Gnosia is a fantastic experience, prompting me to purchase physical copies for Switch and PS5, in addition to my Steam version. While not for everyone, it's a genre highlight.
Steins;Gate Series (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate releases on Switch, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, are essential for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I await the original Steins;Gate port, Steins;Gate Elite is a strong recommendation for anime fans seeking a quality visual novel. Playing the other Steins;Gate games is best done after experiencing the original story.
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES duology, a collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki, is a remarkable pair of adventure games. Despite the absence of Zero Escape on Switch, these titles are well worth their full price, showcasing exceptional storytelling, music, and characters.
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)
This adventure game defies easy categorization, oscillating between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. The story follows a young streamer's daily life, resulting in a memorable and unique experience.
Ace Attorney Series (Variable)
Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch, eliminating any excuses for not playing this beloved adventure game franchise. For newcomers, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles provides the best entry point. The entire series' availability on a single handheld is a significant achievement.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)
Aksys Games and Experience Inc.'s Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While the grotesque imagery might not appeal to all, the excellent localization and compelling stories make it a memorable experience.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)
While not strictly an adventure game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim's blend of real-time strategy and narrative makes it a worthwhile inclusion. This sci-fi masterpiece is a must-play, particularly enjoyable on Switch's OLED screen.
This list surpasses a typical "top 10," reflecting my preference for showcasing a wider range of exceptional games rather than adhering to an arbitrary number. The inclusion of entire series reflects their overall quality and value. If you have other recommendations, please share them! I'm always seeking more compelling stories within these genres. Thank you for reading!
Note: A separate list of otome games is in progress.
