NetEase's Marvel Rivals mistakenly bans legitimate players. The developer, NetEase, recently issued a public apology for wrongfully banning numerous players of their game, Marvel Rivals. The unintentional mass-banning affected users playing on non-Windows platforms.
Accidental Bans on Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck
The incident occurred on January 3rd, when NetEase's anti-cheat system mistakenly flagged players utilizing compatibility layers (such as those needed for Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck) as cheaters. NetEase has since rectified the situation, lifting the bans and offering a sincere apology. They encourage players to report actual cheating and provide avenues for appeal. The Steam Deck's Proton compatibility layer is known for triggering false positives in some anti-cheat systems.
Calls for Universal Character Bans
Separately, the Marvel Rivals community is advocating for the implementation of character bans across all ranks. Currently, this feature is only available to Diamond-ranked players and above. Players argue that expanding this mechanic to lower ranks would improve gameplay balance, provide learning opportunities for new players, and foster more diverse team compositions beyond simple DPS-focused strategies. While NetEase hasn't yet publicly addressed this request, the community's feedback is significant.
