Second Life, the popular social MMO, is now available in public beta for iOS and Android devices. Premium subscribers can access the beta immediately via the App Store and Google Play. However, free access for non-subscribers hasn't been announced yet.
This marks the first public mobile beta release for Second Life. While requiring a Premium account limits access for newcomers, this beta launch should significantly accelerate the release of information about the mobile version.
For those unfamiliar, Second Life is a pioneering MMO that predates the current metaverse hype. Its focus is on social interaction, rather than combat or exploration. Launched in 2003, it's credited with popularizing concepts like social gaming and user-generated content.
Players create and inhabit personalized avatars within Second Life, engaging in various activities and role-playing scenarios.
Is it too late for Second Life?
Second Life's age and continued use of a subscription model, coupled with competition from games like Roblox, raise questions about its current relevance. Despite its historical significance, its future success on mobile remains uncertain. Will this mobile launch revitalize the game, or is it a last-ditch effort? Only time will tell.
