Gearbox Makes a Fan's Wish Reality
An Exclusive Borderlands 4 Preview
Caleb McAlpine, a devoted Borderlands fan battling cancer, received an incredible gift: early access to the highly anticipated Borderlands 4. In a heartwarming Reddit post on November 26th, he recounted his journey: a first-class flight to Gearbox's studio, a meeting with the developers, and a hands-on experience with the game itself.
Caleb's description of Borderlands 4 was simple yet powerful: "We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far and it was amazing." He further detailed the trip, mentioning a studio tour and meetings with developers, culminating in a meeting with CEO Randy Pitchford.
Following this extraordinary experience, Caleb and a friend enjoyed the hospitality of the Omni Frisco Hotel, even receiving a VIP tour of the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters.
While Caleb remained tight-lipped about specific Borderlands 4 details, he emphasized the "amazing experience" and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he received.
Caleb's Plea to Gearbox
On October 24th, 2024, Caleb initially shared his heartfelt request on Reddit. He openly discussed his prognosis – a 7-12 month life expectancy, potentially extending to under two years with successful chemo – and his earnest wish to play Borderlands 4 before it was too late. He posed the question: "Is there anyone that knows how to get in touch with Gearbox to see if there is a way to play the game early?"
This "long shot" plea resonated deeply with the Borderlands community. An outpouring of support followed, with many reaching out to Gearbox to advocate on Caleb's behalf.
Randy Pitchford responded swiftly via Twitter(X), directly referencing Caleb's Reddit post: "Caleb and I are now chatting via e-mail and we’re going to do whatever we can to make something happen." Within a month, Gearbox fulfilled Caleb's wish, granting him early access to the game ahead of its 2025 release.
A GoFundMe campaign continues to support Caleb in his fight against cancer, exceeding $12,415 USD and surpassing its initial goal of $9,000. The story of his Borderlands 4 experience has further amplified the campaign's reach and support.
