Angklung: A Traditional Indonesian Musical Instrument

The word "angklung" originates from the Sundanese language, derived from "angkleung-angkleung," describing the rhythmic movements of the player. "Klung" refers to the sound produced by the instrument. Different sized bamboo tubes create varying notes, producing a beautiful melody when played collectively.

Typically crafted from black bamboo (Awi Wulung) or Awi Temen (a type of bamboo with a yellowish-white hue when dried), angklungs are assembled by binding 2 to 4 differently sized bamboo tubes together with rattan.

Playing the Angklung

Playing the angklung is relatively simple. Players hold the upper frame and shake the lower section to produce sound. Three basic techniques exist:

  1. Kerulung (Vibration): The most common technique involves holding the base of the bamboo tubes and shaking them left and right repeatedly.

  2. Centok (Flick): The tube is quickly flicked from the finger to the palm, producing a single, sharp sound.

  3. Tengkep: One tube is vibrated while another is held, producing a single note.

Types of Angklung

Various regions in Indonesia have developed unique angklung types:

  1. Angklung Kanekes: Originating from the Baduy community, this angklung is played only during rice planting ceremonies, exclusively crafted by members of the Baduy Dalam tribe.

  2. Angklung Reog: Used to accompany the Reog Ponorogo dance in East Java, this angklung has a distinct sound and shape, producing a louder sound with only two notes. It's also often used as decoration and sometimes called "klong kluk."

  3. Angklung Dogdog Lojor: Part of a rice-planting ritual and tradition of the Kasepuhan Pancer Pangawinan community in Banten Kidul, this angklung is played during specific ceremonies. Six players participate, two playing the Dogdog Lojor angklung and four playing larger angklungs.

  4. Angklung Badeng: From Garut, initially used in rice planting rituals, its function shifted to accompany Islamic da'wah (religious preaching) following the spread of Islam. Nine angklungs are used, including roel, kecer, indung, anak, dogdog, and gembyung types.

  5. Angklung Padaeng: Introduced by Daeng Soetigna in 1938, this angklung features a modified structure allowing for diatonic notes, enabling it to be played with modern instruments. Handiman Diratmasasmita and Udjo Ngalegena further developed and popularized this diatonic angklung.
